• Call for immediate investigation of Kakrapar nuclear accident
I am one of the 2 million people living in Surat and I live approximately 80km away from the Kakrapar nuclear plant, which recently suffered an accident that lead to leakage of heavy water and subsequently triggered an emergency situation. An accident and radioactive leak would pose a serious threat to over 2 million people that live in Surat as well as close to a million that live within the 30km radius of the plant. I have reasons to believe that the accident is more serious than it is made out to be and I have a right to know what is going on at the Kakrapar nuclear plant. Majority of us might not be experts or nuclear scientist, but we are people living in the area around this plant. We depend on experts for information and explanation more than just empty assurances. The information that we’ve been asking from the operator and the regulator has yet not been disclosed. We asked IMPORTANT questions about the radiation levels in a 20km radius of the plant, about the quantum/amount of heavy water that has leaked, about whether the leak has been identified. First we were ignored, then we were told ‘It’s not a safety concern’. If that is true, why not simply disclose this information and put our fears to rest? Given the current situation, I would request Mr. Jitendra Singh to order an independent investigation of the Kakrapar nuclear accident and the handling of the situation. This will ensure that it is not repeated again. Like the Kakrapar nuclear reactor, there are eight other reactors of similar design in India, which also happen to be older than 20 years. Over 4 million people live within the 30km radius of these reactors. The problems that are true for Kakrapar reactor might also be true for these reactors. And hence as a precautionary step, they need to be examined too. Failure to do so might put 4 million lives at risk. Sincerely, Krishnakanth Chauhan

  • OILY MOILY NEEDS TO GO!
This is completely unacceptable – the Minister must resign right now and his decisions must be reviewed. Can you imagine generations of Indians living with their forests, animals and biodiversity wiped out? Because believe it or not, this is the path Mr. Veerappa Moily is taking us on. And this is an irreversible process that will not benefit the people of India in any way. And only serves the interests of a few corporate players and I refuse to accept that. Support me in asking the Prime Minister to sack Mr. Moily NOW!

  • Stop San Onofre from Re-Opening!
Eight million people could be affected by a major accident at San Diego's San Onofre nuclear power plant. They would be affected by nuclear radioactivity. If you have been exposed to a high level of radioactivity, there is no turning back. You are then radioactive forever. It doesn't go away. If you live and have children, your children can be born with birth defects because the radioactivity changes your DNA in your chromosomes. This is your genetic material that forms your children. This would also happen to animals and plants, since they also have DNA. If there is a major accident, such as a meltdown, you can get burned on your skin and your skin can fall off. I am thankful that this did not happen at San Onofre this time, but it could happen if we allow San Onofre to be re-opened, and I don't want to take that chance.

  • Stop violence against Kudankulam protesters
After Fukushima the world recognized the folly of building nuclear reactors on the coastline, apart from other reasons, because the world's polar ice caps are rapidly melting and increased tsunamis are probable. But the Indian government has refused to step back from its folly and the Tamil Nad government has become its rubber stamp. As such the protesters at Kudankulam are not merely the protectors of their own land and livelihood, they are the protectors of our planet. Their satyagraha against the irreversible act of loading nuclear fuel into the Kudankulam reactors is a fight against myopia and madness. Shooting into this crowd was no less heinous than the actions of General Dyer at Jallianwalla Bagh. Crushing dissent without addressing it through a peaceful discussion is undemocratic and condemnable in the world’s largest democracy. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha we ask that you step back from the brink and re-align yourself with the forces of sanity. Sign this petition asking CM Jayalalitha to withdraw the police force and have a civilised discussion with the people protesting against the nuclear power project in Kudankulam.
